SYNTAXICAL ERRORS IN STUDENTS' EXPOSITORY ESSAY AT STATE MIDDLE SCHOOL 254 JAKARTA

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze syntactic errors in the expository essays of grade IX students of SMP Negeri 254 Jakarta. The research method used to analyze the expository essays was the content analysis method with a qualitative approach. The students' expository essays studied amounted to 34 essays. The types of syntactic errors found consisted of errors in word form in 103 sentences or 27.8%, sentences with inappropriate word choice/diction in 88 sentences or 23.7%, redundant sentences or pleonasm in 87 sentences or 23.4%, sentences with non-standard structures in 42 sentences or 11.3%, ambiguous sentences in 20 sentences or 5.4%, sentences that lack logic or experience logical errors in 17 sentences or 4.6%, and contamination or confusion in 14 sentences or 3.8%. Based on the percentage of findings, it can be concluded that students still use inappropriate word choices/diction, non-standard sentence structures, inappropriate word forms, redundant sentences, ambiguous sentences, and ambiguous sentences. It is hoped that the results of this study can be used to determine the steps in the learning process, organize learning materials in stages from easy to difficult, from simple to complex, and so on.
