THERAPEUTIC INNOVATION: DIR METHOD IN ENHANCING INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION OF CHILDREN WITH SPEECH DELAY

ABSTRACT: Speech delay in children can have an impact on their communication interactions with the surrounding environment and various other aspects of life, and can even continue into adulthood. Therefore, appropriate methods are needed to overcome this, one of which is using the DIR method, a method that emphasizes the importance of development, individual differences, and the child's relationship with the surrounding environment. The purpose of this study is to describe the effect of the DIR method on improving interpersonal communication in children with speech delay. This research was conducted at SLB Negeri 1 Makassar with a word arrangement game or DIR with samples taken by purposive sampling. The sample selection design used Single Subject Research (SSR) design, which is a single subject. The research data focused on 13 aspects/indicators of language skills owned by the sample. Data collection used recording guidelines. The data were statistically analyzed using the Sign Test. The results showed that the calculated P value was smaller than the criterion of the specified significance level (0.022 ≤ 0.05), meaning that H0 was rejected. This is indicated by a significant difference from the pre and post tests. The conclusion of this study is that the DIR method has an effect on improving interpersonal communication skills in children with speech delay.
