DIFFERENCES IN THE WRITING STYLES OF SHORT STORIES BY MALE ANDFEMALE STUDENTS AT THE BINAUL UMMAH INTEGRATED ISLAMIC HIGH SCHOOL (IT) IN GRADE XIACADEMIC YEAR 2013/2014

Abstract

In teaching short story writing, each student, especially male and female students, will inevitably produce different results. This is supported by an expert's opinion regarding the differences between males and females in terms of physical characteristics, behavior, language skills, and mindset. Therefore, these differences may occur in short story writing in terms of plot development, characterization, setting, narrative perspective, and language style based on the subject and setting used as story-building elements. The purpose of this study is to determine the short story writing styles of male students in grade XI at Binaul Ummah Integrated Islamic High School, the short story writing styles of female students in grade XI at Binaul Ummah Integrated Islamic High School, and the differences in short story writing styles between male and female students in grade XI at Binaul Ummah Integrated Islamic High School. This study uses short stories as the object of research, and there are 18 short stories, consisting of 9 short stories written by male students and 9 short stories written by female students. The method used in this study is a comparative descriptive research method, which is a qualitative research method. Meanwhile, the research technique used was to conduct a short story writing test, which required students to complete the test within one week as homework. After the necessary data was collected, the author analyzed each short story and grouped them based on the author's gender, namely male authors and female authors. Then, to make it easier to identify the differences in their short story writing styles, the author created a table as a tool to clarify the data. The results of the data processing showed that the author concluded that in short story writing activities, male students used non-conventional plots less than female students. In addition, male students preferred to use third-person narration, while female students preferred to use first-person narration in their stories.
