An Analysis of Connotative Meaning and Changes in Meaning in the Headlines of the "Mind of the People" Newspaper from October 2013 to January 2014

Abstract

The formulation of the problem in this study are: 1) Are there words that contain connotative meaning in the headlines of Pikiran Rakyat for the period of October 2013 to January 2014? 2) How is the sense value of the words with connotative meaning in the headlines of Pikiran Rakyat for the period of October 2013 to January 2014? 3) What are the types of changes in meaning in the headlines of Pikiran Rakyat for the period of October 2013 to January 2014. The research method used by the researcher is a qualitative descriptive method and to obtain data in analyzing the researcher uses documentation techniques. The number of Pikiran Rakyat newspapers for the period of October 2013 to January 2014 is 102 newspapers, but the researcher took a sample from the entire population of 25 newspapers analyzed. All headlines from the samples taken contain connotative meaning and changes in meaning are as many as 222 headlines. The results of the analysis can be concluded that: 1) The connotative meaning and emotional value in the headlines of the Pikiran Rakyat newspaper for the period of October 2013 to January 201, there are 109 words from 103 headlines that contain connotative meaning and emotional value. In one headline there are two words that contain connotative meaning. In one word can have several meanings, seen from the context of the sentence. Such as the word liquid found in the following headlines: Funds have not been disbursed and Melt the atmosphere. The word liquid has shifted from its denotative meaning of making into water, and now contains another meaning. In the first sentence the word liquid contains the meaning of not yet being released funds, or the absence of funds. While in the second sentence the word liquid or melt means changing the atmosphere. The word liquid has a different meaning if placed in different sentences. From the results of the analysis of the factors that influence the emergence of connotative meaning in the headlines are the differences in social relations and changes in time related to emotional value. 2) The emotional value contained in the headlines of the Pikiranrakyat newspaper for the period of October 2013 to January 2014 mostly has a positive sense value, and only a few have a neutral sense value or do not contain a high sense value (positive) or low sense value (negative). Words that stand alone have lexical or denotative meaning, so to analyze the sense value referred to in the headlines must be seen as a whole in the headlines and the content of the news. For example, the word "melek" in the headlines. Portal, invites teachers to be literate in Science and Technology, The word "melek" means not sleeping or seeing which is considered rude so that if seen lexically the word has a low or negative sense value, but when it is in a sentence the word "melek" becomes high or positive sense value seeing the intention conveyed is good, namely inviting teachers to open their insights to the progress of science and technology. 3) Changes in meaning contained in the headlines of the Pikiranrakyat newspaper for the period of October 2013 to January 2014 there are 125 words from 119 headlines, most of which are changes in breadth or generalization, namely changes in meaning that initially only had one meaning but now have other meanings that are influenced by several factors causing the change itself. The changes in meaning that occurred in the headlines of Pikiran Rakyat newspaper for the period of October 2013 to January 2014 were caused by the need for new words, differences in responses, abbreviations, associations, exchange of sensory responses, differences in fields of use and developments in science and technology. The changes in meaning of amelioration or elevation of meaning and changes in meaning of pejoration or lowering of meaning were caused by factors of differences in responses related to the value of taste, causing the new meaning to have a high or low value of taste from the original meaning.
