DIFFERENCES IN THE ABILITIES OF GRADE VII STUDENTS OF SMP NEGERI 1 LURAGUNG IN THE 2014/2015 ACADEMIC YEAR IN UNDERSTANDING THE CONTENT OF SHORT STORIES USING LISTENING TECHNIQUES AND READING TECHNIQUES

Abstract

The title of this research is Differences in the Abilities of Grade VII Students of SMP Negeri 1 Luragung in the 2014/2015 Academic Year in Understanding the Contents of Short Stories Using Listening Techniques and Reading Techniques. The formulation of the problem in this research is as follows. 1) How are the abilities of grade VII 2 students of SMP Negeri 1 Luragung in the 2014/2015 academic year in understanding the contents of the short story "Mata" by Titi Said using listening techniques? 2) How are the abilities of grade VII 8 students of SMP Negeri 1 Luragung in the 2014/2015 academic year in understanding the contents of the short story "Mata" by Titi Said using reading techniques? 3) Is there a difference in the abilities of grade VII 2 and VII 8 students of SMP Negeri 1 Luragung in the 2014/2015 academic year in understanding the contents of the short story "Mata" by Titi Said using listening techniques and reading techniques? The research method used in this research is descriptive comparative. Conclusion: 1) The ability of class VII 2 students in understanding the content elements of the short story "Mata" by Titi Said using listening techniques is in good criteria, because they obtained an average score of 66.16 which is in the range (66.00 - 80.00). So the hypothesis is rejected. 2) The ability of class VII 8 students in understanding the content elements of the short story "Mata" by Titi Said using reading techniques is in sufficient criteria, because they obtained an average score of 58.44 which is in the range (56.00-65.00). So the hypothesis is rejected. 3) There is a difference in the ability of class VII 2 and VII 8 students of SMP Negeri 1 Luragung in the 2014/2015 academic year in understanding the content elements of the short story "Mata" by Titi Said using reading techniques and listening techniques. The results are as follows. The results of the difference test using the t test between reading techniques and listening techniques for the short story "Mata" by Titi Said. The t-table value (dk 70) with a significance level of 0.05 or 5% is 2,000. The calculated t-value is 1.99. It turns out that the calculated t is smaller than the t-table, the conclusion is that there is no difference or it is not significant. So the hypothesis is rejected.
