Abstract

This research is an application of a model development research on a web-based media prototype which is then implemented into a CD for self-study. The target of this follow-up research is to help 11th grade students so that they can develop their knowledge about the formation of compound sentences (multi-level and equivalent) independently. With this self-study CD, it is expected that their ability in writing narrative essays will be better because they are able to write compound sentences/multi-level in the narrative essays they write. This quantitative research was conducted with a quasi-experiment where 30 students from two 11th grades were randomly selected as samples. The pre-test was conducted by asking students to write a narrative essay with the theme "Best things in last vacation", and the post-test was conducted by asking them to write a narrative essay with the theme "Bad things in Last vacation." After the pre-test, students were given an English sentence formation training CD for one week. The post-test was conducted after they had done independent learning using the CD. The results were then assessed using a holistic assessment rubric (Brown, 2004, p.242). The results of the SPSS 22.0 calculations state that there are significant results from the results of independent learning using the Compound Sentence Formation learning CD.
