LANGUAGE CONSERVATION AND REVITALIZATION AS ONE OF THE EFFORTS TO INTERNATIONALIZE THE INDONESIAN LANGUAGE

Abstract

If we look back at the contents of the 1928 Youth Pledge related to language, namely: We, the sons and daughters of Indonesia, uphold the unifying language of Indonesia, then we can take the meaning from this statement, namely that the Indonesian youth at the time of the Youth Pledge had a high character and sense of nationalism. They swore with a firm determination to declare themselves to protect the homeland, nation, and Indonesian as the language of unity. What is the meaning of the oath: upholding the unifying language of Indonesia? The word 'uphold' according to the Indonesian Dictionary is to carry on the head, obey, glorify, respect, appreciate. Based on this meaning, we as the Indonesian people, as the next generation of the nation, are obliged to continue these ideals. However, it turns out that carrying out this mandate is not as easy as saying it. Along with the development of the times, the nature of pride and loyalty to one's own language, namely Indonesian, is increasingly eroded. The entry of foreign cultures, the influence of language on social media, the development of communication technology has had an impact, especially young people are more proud if they communicate using other people's languages ​​(foreign languages) which they consider more modern or more respected.
