INDONESIAN LANGUAGE TOWARDS AN INTERNATIONAL LANGUAGE

Abstract

Various changes have occurred in the lives of Indonesian society, particularly those related to the economic and political system. In the economic field, for example, there has been a shift in the trading system from traditional to free trade, from a bargaining system to a fixed price system. This situation has spread to small towns across the country. In fact, this system has penetrated (small) retail trade, such as markets/small shops (mini markets) and kiosks selling goods and drinks. In addition to the disappearance of the bargaining culture, a new phenomenon is spreading as if marking social class: online shopping. Shopping without having to leave the house, just order online and have the goods delivered to your home. This condition has brought large businesses into traditional trading areas, even a number of large businesses from outside Indonesia approaching traditional markets. The trading system has also changed, starting with the European Economic System and developments in the Southeast Asian region. Southeast Asia has entered the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC). This condition has placed foreign languages ​​in a strategic position, allowing them to enter various aspects of national life and influence the development of languages ​​in the ASEAN region, such as Indonesian (Sugono, 2014). This situation has brought about changes in people's lifestyles and behaviors, particularly in Indonesia. For example, a sense of community has been replaced by individualism; social interaction in public places has lost its space, such as shopping centers called markets, which were once places for social interaction among citizens. Now, these places have been replaced by modern markets (supermarkets) that do not provide opportunities for social interaction. Even between buyers and sellers, let alone with the owners of merchandise, there is no conversation. These phenomena indicate that the scope for the use of Indonesian as a lingua franca is shifting. Conversely, the use of foreign languages ​​is increasingly gaining a place in today's society.
