MAINTENANCE OF JAVANESE LANGUAGE IN THE COMMUNITY OF CIDADAP VILLAGE, CIREBON REGENCY

Abstract

Regional languages ​​are ancestral heritage that must be maintained because language is the only means of verbal communication. With language we can introduce the characteristics or identity, as well as the culture of the community. Currently the use of regional languages ​​is decreasing, one of the causes is the entry of other cultures into the existing culture. However, it is different from the people of Cidadap Village in Cipejeuh Kulon Village, Lemahabang District, Cirebon Regency. It is known that the community still maintains the use of Javanese in their daily communication. Even though the majority of people in the village use Sundanese to communicate. Currently, maintaining the language in a region is a challenge for the community. In line with the advancement of science, population mobility, and the ease with which outside cultures enter it, which causes a community to communicate in various languages. For this reason, public awareness is needed to maintain the identity of their group. The objectives of this study are: 1) What are the attitudes and language choices of the people of Cidadap Village, Cirebon Regency; and 2) describe the factors that influence the people of Cidadap Village to still maintain their language. Thus, it can be seen that the people of Cidadap Village still maintain Javanese in their daily communication. This indicates that language loyalty among the people of Cidadap Village is still maintained as a distinctive characteristic of their identity.
