Abstract

This study aims to determine the level of phonological awareness in 3-year-old children. Phonological awareness is an important skill in preparing children to learn to read. The respondents in this study were three 3-year-old children, consisting of two girls and one boy. The study was conducted using a qualitative descriptive method. Data collection techniques were carried out through observation and a work test. The work test on the respondents was conducted using a work test guide adapted from the PAST (Phonological Awareness Skill Test) developed by GRRC (Green River Regional Education Center), Kentucky, United States. The results showed that 3-year-old children already have good phonological awareness at the level of sentence segmentation, rhyming sound recognition, rhyming sound production, and syllable combination.
