Abstract

SEMIOTIC STUDY OF DAS UNHEIMLICHE IN THE NOVEL SUMIRAT ING MRIPAT BY IRUL S. BUDIANTO

ABSTRACT: The phenomenon of das Unheimliche (uncanniness)is central to the aesthetic and psychological experience in Irul S. Budianto's novel Sumirat ing Mripat. In this novel, things that are actually familiar (Heimlich) become strange and frightening (Unheimlich). Using Pierce's semiotic approach and Freud's concept of dasUnheimliche, this study aims to explain howthe relationship between signs (icons, indices, and symbols), as well as the semiotics of space and supernatural elements, work to construct the meaning of anxiety in the Javanese cultural context. This studyuses a heuristic and hermeneutic semiotic reading approach. The data and data sources were obtained from the novel Sumirat ing Mripat by Irul S. Budianto. The results show that das Unheimliche in this novel not only describesfear, but also becomes a path to the main character's inner awareness.Odd signs such as a house that turns into wingit or supernatural visions encourage the character toreflect and find inner peace through prayer and surrender. The conclusion of this researchshows that there is a distinctive form of “Unheimliche Jawa”, namely strangenessthat not only presents feelings of horror or discomfort, but alsoreveals the relationship between human consciousness and spiritual values in Javanese culture.
